| 10 Nov 2008 | Barack Obama’s Triumph Barack Obama’s election win this week is a truly fantastic triumph for minority groups across the world, whether race, gender or sexuality. No-one imagined that in our lifetime we would see a black President come to power and the presence of Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin in the run up also goes to show how far the US have come in terms of equality |
| 3 Nov 2008 | Older Women Leading the Way The ONS released statistics this week that found that more older women have jobs than ever before, outstripping working men of a corresponding age. It is really inspiring to see how these women are still full of energy for the working world and are refusing to give up past the age of 50. |
| 23 Oct 2008 | Help For Smaller Businesses in the Downturn Gordon Brown has this week finally acknowledged that we are heading into recession and there is no doubt that times are going to get tougher for all of us. Both the Government and the Opposition have been putting forward proposals this week to try and ease the burden on small businesses, who will inevitably feel the crunch as consumers and businesses are tightening their belts. |
| 15 Oct 2008 | Small Business Week This week is BT Small Business Week, and it’s great to have a spotlight on the 4.6 million smaller businesses for a change. Recent news has focused heavily on the impact the economic slowdown is having on large corporations, but it is reassuring to focus on the huge contribution that these smaller firms are having at this time. |
| 8 Oct 2008 | Getting On With Colleagues As the season turns and the nights draw in it’s hardly surprising to hear that many people dread going into work, but what’s more depressing, according to a recent survey, is that nearly two million people fear going to work due to not getting on with their colleagues. Luckily we don’t have that problem here at everywoman and we thank our lucky stars that we are surrounded by warm hearted and inspiring colleagues. |
| 4 Oct 2008 | The Bridget Jones Syndrome So poor old Bridget Jones is being blamed for the demise of the family, according to Tory MP David Willetts. Willetts believes that the increase in women graduates (‘Bridget Joneses’ as he refers to them) deprives men of the opportunity to act as the breadwinner, and in turn a breakdown in British society. |
| 26 Sep 2008 | The importance of networking The importance of networking is a hot topic here at everywoman in light of the imminent launch of our own women in business online network. The ever-growing number of online social networking sites haven proven to be a vital tool in business. Only last week I participated in the launch of a new Facebook page led by Teresa May MP at the House of Commons. Teresa is passionate about engaging more young women in politics regardless of party allegiance and I joined a group of young women to discuss the issues affecting their careers including equal pay and attitudes to flexible working. |
| 18 Sep 2008 | Degree in Enterprise Development We often hear that entrepreneurs are born and not made, but Theo Paphitis’ new degree in Enterprise Development, to be launched next year at Huddersfield University seems to be a fresh approach for young people wanting to start their own business. Before this, it was often felt that the worlds of education and entrepreneurialism worked exclusively of one another. |
| 12 Sep 2008 | Women and Domestic Violence Phew…we’ve survived the adidas women’s 5k challenge, which we ran, or in some cases stumbled through, last Sunday. Olympic sprinters we most definitely are not, but this run is not about us, it’s about our outstanding charity partner, Refuge, and the work they undertake to help the thousands of women in the UK who suffer from domestic violence. |
| 4 Sep 2008 | The Enriched - a new demographic emerges Whilst all we seem to hear these days in the media is doom and gloom about the economy, it was interesting to hear this week, according to NatWest private banking, there is a new emerging demographic of business people, ‘The Enriched’. This predominantly younger, increasingly female group are those that are eligible to receive private banking services, although many will not be aware of this. |
